1. Why can’t I log in?
Answer: There are several reasons for this, most of which are easily fixable by you, the user. A couple may require help from the CADGIS lab monitors.
The solution: Ask at the front desk for the Troubleshooting Logon Errors handout. Look for the error message that matches the one on your screen. Read the solution. Respond accordingly.
2. Why can’t I log on to the scanners in the CADGIS lab?
Answer: Scanner privileges are allowed only to those students who have taken the scanning workshop. The workshop takes half-an-hour or less and is offered 6 times a week.
The solution: Sign-up sheets are posted on the wall between the CADGIS lobby and the Pine lab and are on the CADGIS website – click here. Find a time that is good for you and sign up with your name and PAWS ID.
3. How can I use the large scanner or matte/glossy plotter?
Answer: The large scanner and matte/glossy plotter require several important tasks to operate correctly and avoid any damage to either the machine or the work you are trying to scan/plot. A CADGIS employee must log on to either of these computers and assist in the scanning/plotting job.
The solution: Simply ask someone working behind the desk if they can help you scan or plot your work. At certain times there may not be a qualified employee on duty. To make sure you can scan/plot click here for a list of times that the scanner/plotters are available.
4.Why doesn’t the size of my print match the paper size I specified?
Answer:Most likely your image size has not changed, just the paper size. The size of your image must match the size of the paper you are printing it on or there will be problems.
The solution: Always choose "Print WITH Preview". If you do not see your entire image in the preview screen or the image doesn’t take up all of the preview screen then your image size and paper size do not match up. First check the paper size under page setup manager and make sure that is the paper size and plotter that you desire. Than go back and check the size of your image to make sure that it matches the dimensions of your desired paper size.
5. Can I print/plot from computers outside the CADGIS lab?
Answer: Any computer connected to the LSU network can access the CADGIS lab printers/plotters. The CADGIS website has an easy step-by-step process for adding the CADGIS lab plotters to outside computers. You will need to come into the lab to pay for the plot and have the monitors send it to the plotter from Papyrus.
The solution: Click here and follow the instructions under "Submitting a print on personal machines" (2nd section in that page) to load a CADGIS printer onto the computer.
6. Can I connect my laptop computer to the CADGIS lab server (on-campus through wireless)?
Answer: The CADGIS lab has three drives that can be mapped to your laptop or home computer. This drives contain CADGIS data (X:), CADGIS class information (Y:), and your CADGIS personal user space (Z:). Several easy steps can complete this process in just a few minutes.
The solution: On your laptop go to "My Computer". Click on "Tools" in the toolbar and choose "Map Network Drive…". Select the letter of the drive you wish to represent that access on your laptop. Uncheck reconnect at logon. Click on "Different User Name". Enter "lsu\" followed by your PAWS login and in the next box enter your PAWS password, then click "OK". In the blank space named "Folder:" enter one of the three following addresses depending on which drive you want access to…
\\lsu.edu\cadgis\users\"yourPAWSID"\ for the Z: Drive
\\lsu.edu\cadgis\classinfo\ for the Y: Drive
\\lsu.edu\cadgis\data\ for the X: Drive
\\lsu.edu\cadgis\homework for the W: Drive
7. Why is printing/plotting so expensive?
Answer: Materials are very expensive. Your technology fee helps pay for the hardware and software you use in the CADGIS lab, but those items which need to be continually replaced (i.e. - paper and ink) cannot be paid for by the technology fee because of the tech fee rules. These items, and partial pay for the CADGIS “techs”, are the cost of your print. Also CADGIS prices are generally lower than off-campus commercial services.
The solution: Several other commercial businesses offer printing/plotting in Baton Rouge.
8. When are different labs open and when do they have classes in them?
Answer: The labs have regularly scheduled classes that are posted on the CADGIS website.
The solution: Click here for a list of times the different labs will be available.
9. Why doesn’t CADGIS lab have Macintosh computers or Macintosh compatibility?
Answer: CADGIS use to be a PC/MAC lab. However with Dell computers reduced prices for education facilities CADGIS can get twice as many computers for the same price. Also most GIS programs don’t run on Macintosh computers.
The solution: CADGIS techs are currently studying the Windows configuration needed to allow Macs to print to the CADGIS lab and whether a postscript printer is needed to facilitate this.
10. Why doesn’t my print/plot appear under my PAWS account on the Papyrus machines?
Answer: One possible reason is that you are using someone else's PAWS account to plot. This situation has occurs regularly in the CADGIS lab. The previous user of a workstation forgets to log out, and the next user begins using the workstation without logging in. As a result, when the current user plots, the plot will appear under the name of the previous user.
The solution: ALWAYS LOGOUT! Also, when you sit down to use a workstation, log into the workstation. If a workstation does not ask you for a username and password, log out the previous user.
